Want to Grow Beautiful Variegated Ginger Plants? Just Try These Growing Tips

The variegated ginger is a stunning and eye-catching plant. It is a member of the Zingieracea family with 1,300 species having been identified in Asia, America and Africa.

The flowers bloom in clusters that branch off from the main plant stalk. The plant requires two years of healthy growth to develop flowers. The ginger leaves grow up to 12 inches in length and 3 inches in width. This makes the plant quite impressive when mature. The leaves have a variegated pattern and each plant has its own uniqueness.

The Variegated ginger can do well if grown in a container. During the cold winters of the North, it’s best to bring them inside. The plant will handle temperatures as low as 25 degrees, but a frozen ground can kill the roots and the plant may never recover. If you are going to keep the plant inside during the winter, place it where plenty of sunlight is available.

Resistant to most garden pests

Spider mites are known to plague the variegated shell ginger. These small garden pests have eight legs and are attracted to hot areas of a home or garden. Ladybug and lacewing are beneficial insects that feed on spider mites. Other natural methods of getting rid of spider mite are also available. For the most part the plant is resistant to pests.

Watering the Shell Ginger Plant

Do not be shy when it comes to watering the variegated ginger. The plant requires plenty of water just be sure the area has good drainage. As with most plants apply enough water so that it reaches the root ball. The best time to water the ginger plant is in the late afternoon or early morning. If you water late at night you are inviting fungus to grow on the plant.

Since the variegated ginger grows up to 6 feet in height and up to 10 feet in width
it makes a great ornamental for lawns. The accent it gives to an otherwise open space will add color and dimension to the area. If you decide to grow the plant in a pot, every couple of years you will have to divide the plant into smaller parts. The reason is because the plant can quickly outgrow it original container.

The variegated ginger is a beautiful plant and will make a wonderful addition to your home or garden. They are easy to grow, care for, and they bloom throughout summer.
